(ANA) – Winemakers requested the abolition of an excise duty in wine on Thursday, during a meeting with Agricultural Development Minister Vangelis Apostolou, noting that it is disastrous for the sector.

The president of the National Inter-Professional Organization of Vine and Wine of Greece Vangelis Argyris and other representatives participating in the meeting said the tax must be scrapped without further delay “as it has now been proved it destroys the structures of the industry, favoring parasitic networks.”

The two sides also discussed the state’s contribution in the implementation of a strategic plan for wine making as well as allowing the union to utilize part of the former royal palace complex in Tatoi to create an Ark of Greek wine varieties.

The union also asked Apostolou to help promote Greek wine at an upcoming event (June 14-26) in Australia by attending it and handed him an invitation.
