Aegean’s passenger traffic up

The Greek airline has got off to an impressive start for 2018, with a 12 per cent rise in numbers over the past three months compared to the same period last year

Aegean Airlines is off to a good start this year. On Thursday the Greek carrier announced a 12 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared to the same time in 2017.

A member of the Star Alliance airline group, it revealed that passenger numbers totalled 2.36 million in past three months compared to 2.10 million, increasing its load factor from 76.8 per cent to 81.2 per cent.

The increase has mainly been noted on Aegean’s international routes, which have risen by 16 per cent.

Looking to renew its fleet of single-aisle planes and add capacity to expand on its services, last month the airline put in an order for 42 aircraft from Airbus worth a total of €4 billion, one of the biggest investments to be made by a private Greek company since the financial crisis hit in 2010.

This year the carrier will be offering 11 new routes, among them Basel in Switzerland, Spain’s Malaga, and Palermo, Turin and Bologna in Italy.
