Kountoura: Greek tourism is booming

In her address to the Greek Hospitality Awards 2019, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura referred to the spectacular growth of Greek tourism by over 35 pct over the last four years and its emergence as a driving force for the economy and development.

The event was held in Athens under the auspices of the tourism ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
"Since 2015, Greece has recorded double-digit growth rates in tourism compared to the world average through its national tourism policy, its strategic agreements and negotiations as well as dynamic actions for its promotion," the minister underlined.

Continuous tourism development in recent years has led to significant economic growth in the tourism industry over the past two years, with double-digit growth in turnover and profitability, rising employment and an explosion of new investment. It has supported the Greek economy as a whole by contributing to the development of all productive sectors linked to tourism.
"We have restored our credibility and built relationships with the global tourism market and travel industry leaders. We have strengthened our outward orientation and our country is one of the most popular destinations for tourism all year round," she added.

She stressed that 2019 is a demanding year as several conditions keep the entire European travel market on alert. The Greek tourism ministry, she said, is closely monitoring these developments with the aim of maintaining high demand and enhancing its tourist market share. Moreover, she said that the ministry has drafted a development plan for the future of the sector.
